Ariel began her Jiu jitsu journey in 2015. She started Jiu jitsu with hopes of learning self defense tactics and was captivated by all that it had to offer. She described her jiu jitsu journey as an intrigue leading to a passion and the passion becoming an obsession. She has competed in several competitions at all belt levels. Ariel attributes her strength and confidence on and off the mats to jiu jitsu. She works full time and is a mother of 2 but says jiu jitsu is such an important part of her life and loves sharing it with other people.
Whitney began her Jiu Jitsu journey in August of 2018. She was intrigued when her daughter started and wanting to learn for self defense purposes. She fell in love with training and in 6 months she began competing. She now trains 8-12 times a week and is a mother to 2 children all while volunteering at her church for the kids program.
Nikki is a Purple belt here at Black Tie. She is extremely active in-between her jobs in keeping people healthy and fit. She also Volunteers her time to help coach the ladies class to open up an opportunity for other ladies to see if this (bjj) would be something they would like to pursue.
Melu started doing her training in 2018 and now holds a blue belt ranked under Corey. Mels dad convinced her to try a jiujitsu class. Melu started doing her training in 2018 and now holds a blue belt ranked under Corey. Mels dad convinced her to try a jiujitsu class. She watched him compete prior to the class and was impressed at how well he did against larger opponents. She remembers feeling so inspired and thinking if her dad can do that so can she. After a short time she learned that jiujitsu is an excellent way for a smaller person to use technique as well as leverage to control an aggressor. Once she understood this concept she was able to have a lot more confidence in her abilities as a martial artist.
Natalia currently holds a blue belt in Brazilian jiujitsu under Corey Brown. Her interest was sparked after her son trained for about a year and a half. While watching her son in the kids program It seemed to be a lot of fun and challenging at the same time. She also wanted to get in shape and loose some weight. She has been hooked ever since she started.
Emily is a Blue belt here at Black Tie, and began training in 2021. She was inspired to step onto the mats herself after watching her husband and daughter begin the sport, and has since fallen in love with Jiu Jitsu. Since becoming a Blue belt, she has been helping at the school with ladies program and volunteering her time to show other ladies just how amazing is.

Julia was first introduced to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu when she was 19 years old. She was Skeptical of such an unfamiliar art, she didn't want to try. After some convincing, Julia took her first jiujitsu class and fell involve with it. Now she couldn't imagine her life without training 5-6 times a week. She has been helping little kids in the Cape location and (as of late) started her competing journey in tournaments. She considers the BlackTie family to be an enormous blessing for her bjj progression and in life and currently a Blue belt.
Hey there Lovely Lady!!
I’m so excited for this coming Sunday! And I hope you are too!! I wanted to give you a run down on how to prepare mentally and physically for our Women’s trial class at Black Tie BJJ.
P.S. majority of these are my suggestions, but anything that’s a must I will put an asterisk on*
I will say that it seems like I’m getting ready for a date when I’m getting ready to go train lol but it’s information that I wish I had when I first started!
Let’s start with hygiene:
1. Shower - before and after** class!
Before because you’re going to be in someone else’s personal space!
Be mindful and don’t be stinky for them. Hopefully they’ll be respectful back and be clean themselves.
▪ This shower can be a quick one! Water, body wash, water, out!
After because the gym, specifically mats, can have bacteria on
them and you’re sharing sweat with everyone.
2. Brush your teeth
Let’s not be that one person with stinky breath 😁 ▪ Mouthwash is a bonus
3. Smell goods
Deodorant!!**
4. Hair
The goal is to not have hair all up in our faces. The best solution I’ve
found are braids. But for first day, any kind of ponytail will do.
5. Nails**
Keep nails clean and trimmed back. No false nails but Polish is of course fine! Just make sure you won’t be scratching others.
6. Hydrate
Drink enough water, not just for BJJ but for your health! Healthy skin,
healthy body!
What to wear your first class
1. Dri-fit is our friend!! It hides sweat. If possible, try to avoid cotton. So any Dri- fit shirt and leggings for your first free class or free ladies day.
NoGi
2. Shoes
Wear easy slip ons. Once you get inside the gym always wear shoes
unless you’re on the mat. They only come off when you’re on the mat! If you’re on the mat and you need to grab your water or go to the bathroom, put your shoes on!!
3. Eyeglasses
If you have contacts, wear them!! It’ll save you so much hassle!
If you can’t wear contacts or don’t have any, bring your case so you
can put your glasses to the side safely.
What to do after class?
• Laundry!! Lol wash your outfit asap! That’s pretty much it!
Oh, how do you prepare mentally?!
Girl! You got this!! The hardest part is just showing up for the first class. We want to make this as smooth as we can for you.
Don’t worry, majority of other ladies will be at the same level as you! We aren’t going to be against each other, we are here for each other.
I shall see you Sunday!
- Dre 🤍
